It’s been a couple of years now since I’ve practicing protective styling and I couldn’t be happier with my results. My hair has risen from it’s damaged state. I wasn’t allowing my hair to be healthy. I started coloring my hair since Freshman year in High School, not to mention the blow drying and flat iroing. I didn’t realize the amount of damage my hair had suffered throughout the years.

I really don’t know what ephihany I had that made me realize what I was doing to my hair, but I do know that since my daughter showed a complex with her natural hair I became more vigilant in showing her that we do not need to have pin straight hair to feel beautiful. That having coarse, thick, ringlets, tight curls, loose curls, wavy hair, braids, dreads, etc.. is beautiful and wearing Our Natural Crowns makes Us who We Are!!

I love the fact that I am not a slave to the normal wear and tear of my hair, I can wash my hair and let it air dry. My natural waves and volume being celebrated. And on those days that I do want to rock a nice straight hair style, I am guilt free because she knows I take good care of her.

My Proctective Hair Tips

  1. I only have my hair professionally dyed once a year.
  2. I stick to products I know work for my hair type, I rarely try other products.
  3. When applying heat I always use a heat protector such as Chi 44 Iron Guard or Aveeno Blackberry Quinoa Protein Blend Heat Shield. My straight styles last about 2-3 weeks with proper scalp maintenaince.
  4. I always let my hair air dry or wrap my hair over night using the Deva Curl microfiber towel.
  5. I keep my hair well hydrated with Shea Moisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil, Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Hair Oil, and apply leave-ins like the Shea Moisture SugarCane Extract & MeadowFoam Seed Silicone Free Miracle Styler. ( always apply on wet hair and let hair air dry )
  6. Practice protective hair styles. Braid-Outs, Buns, Twist-Outs, and use Head Wraps.
